Chapter Twenty-Seven
To clear her head and gather her thoughts, Sally headed into town to her favorite café, The Nutmeg. It was on Oak Street on the far side of the square, so that gave her time to walk and think.
By the time she got to the café, she was ready to pull out her notepad and plan her next moves.
âHey, Sally,â Joanna, the cheery café owner, greeted Sally as she walked through the door.
Joanna was quite petite, but a barrel of energy and power. Her café was always in perfect running order. Sally sometimes wished she was as organized as Joanna, though Sallyâs Smasher was pretty successful.
âHi, Joanna.â Sally dropped her coat and backpack on a chair at a table in the corner near the window.
âWhat can I get you?â Joanna asked.
âA large cup of your strongest coffee and a blueberry muffin, please.â
âSure, Iâll bring that right over.â
Sally had barely settled herself in the corner when her order arrived. She sipped her still very hot coffee and sorted through all the information she had gathered up to this point. The one thing nagging her mind was the fact that Bill had changed his will two months ago. This was the connection between Bill and Father OâMalley. The change had obviously upset Momma Arnold and the rest of the family. And it had caused a very difficult situation for Sally now that she had to share Billâs part of the bar with Annette. But why would Bill have changed his will so recently? And change it so the people he loved were partly disinherited. It made no sense.
Maybe she should have asked Nancy to get her a copy of Billâs old will as well, if at all possible. No, she didnât want to push Nancy. She was already going out on a limb for Sally as it was. Having the details of both testaments, though, would help narrow down the pool of suspects. If this business was all to do with the will. Sally took a bite of muffin, washing it down with some more of the delicious coffee.
She thought about the family. There were Billâs brothers, Steve and Jack. They were both as big and strong as Bill. They were both angry and could definitely have done it, but she didnât know of a connection between either of them and Jeff. The Arnold family was well known, but they tended to keep to themselves. Bill was the only one who really had a lot of friends in town.
Then there was Billâs sister, Gillian. She had been arrested for beating up Jay. So that showed she had a violent side. But she and Bill were so close, and she wasnât a parishioner of St. Elspethâs.
Jeff.
While Jeff claimed to have been blackmailed into preparing the syringe, he could have easily injected Bill when Bill threw him out of the bar. The timing would be at the far end of what Dr. Wiggams had thought on time of death, but possible. And maybe he wasnât as drunk as he pretended to be when he got in the fight with Zeke.
